Counselling or Coaching — what’s the difference?

Counselling and coaching can look similar on the surface, but they support you in different ways. Many people benefit from one or the other, and some choose a blend of both. Here is a simple guide to help you understand which one might be right for you.

Counselling

Counselling is a therapeutic, reflective process that helps you explore your inner world, emotions and past experiences. It is especially supportive when things feel heavy, confusing or painful.

Counselling might be right for you if you want to:
• understand your emotions
• unpack past experiences or trauma
• explore patterns that keep repeating
• make sense of masking, burnout or identity
• build self awareness and self compassion
• process overwhelm, grief or difficult feelings
• have a safe space to talk without pressure
• heal at your own pace

Counselling focuses on:
• emotional wellbeing
• self understanding
• past and present experiences
• trauma, burnout and identity
• relationships and attachment
• how you feel inside

Counselling is slower, deeper and more reflective. It is about healing rather than action.

Coaching

Coaching is more practical, structured and future focused. It helps you make changes in your life, build strategies and move forward with clarity.

Coaching might be right for you if you want to:
• improve daily routines and organisation
• build confidence
• reduce overwhelm
• create practical steps forward
• understand your executive functioning
• feel more in control of work or home life
• build skills around planning, motivation or communication
• develop realistic strategies that work for your brain

Coaching focuses on:
• day to day functioning
• executive functioning
• communication and routines
• motivation and planning
• workplace confidence
• practical tools and strategies

Coaching is more active and goal oriented. It is about change and movement rather than emotional processing.

Can I do both together?

Some people ask whether they should have counselling and coaching at the same time. In most cases, I would suggest not running them alongside each other.

Counselling and coaching have different purposes and work on different parts of your wellbeing, and trying to do both simultaneously can feel confusing or emotionally overwhelming.

That said, there can be a gentle crossover within sessions when appropriate. For example, we may use simple coaching tools in counselling if practical support feels helpful, or we may explore emotions within coaching if something deeper is getting in the way of progress.

However, the core purpose of each service is different, and it is usually most effective to focus on one approach at a time.

We can always review your needs together and switch approaches when the time feels right for you.

A simple way to remember the difference

Counselling = “Why do I feel this way?”Healing, understanding, emotional exploration.

Coaching = “What can I do next?”Practical tools, steps forward, building confidence and structure.

Both are powerful. Both are supportive.
