It’s common to feel unsure about whether counselling or coaching is the right kind of support.
Both offer space to reflect and grow, but they have different purposes and work in different ways.
This page is here to help you understand the difference, so you can make a choice that feels right for you.
Counselling offers a therapeutic space to explore emotional experiences, patterns, and difficulties in depth. It is often focused on understanding the past and present, processing emotions, and supporting emotional wellbeing.
Counselling may be a good fit if you want to:
Counselling provides a contained, confidential space where emotional safety and therapeutic boundaries are central.
Coaching is future-focused and centred on purpose, direction, and choice.
It supports you to explore where you are now and how you would like to move forward.
Coaching may be a good fit if you want to:
Coaching does not involve clinical therapy or treatment of mental health conditions. It is a reflective, collaborative space focused on growth and forward movement.
You don’t need to be completely certain before booking.
Many people choose to begin with a full first session, with no expectation or pressure to continue beyond that session.
This allows space to explore what you are hoping for, what feels most important right now, and whether coaching/counselling feels like the right fit.
If it becomes clear during that session that a different type of support would be more appropriate, this will be discussed openly and thoughtfully.
Choosing support is an important decision.
A first session offers a calm, contained space to explore what you need, without pressure to commit to ongoing work.
If you decide not to continue after the first session, that choice is fully respected.

To work ethically and safely, clear boundaries are essential.
If coaching feels right but counselling may also be beneficial, we can talk this through and I can suggest other therapists or services where appropriate.
If, during coaching, counselling becomes a more suitable form of support, I will discuss this with you and offer signposting or referral options rather than continuing inappropriately.
