ADHD & Counselling

Understanding ADHD

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental difference in how the brain manages attention, motivation, and impulses. It’s often misunderstood as being about being “easily distracted” or “hyper,” but in reality it’s much more complex. For many people with ADHD, common challenges include:

  • Difficulty with focus, organisation, and completing tasks
  • Forgetfulness, procrastination, and overwhelm
  • Emotional highs and lows, including frustration and burnout
  • Impulsivity, restlessness, or feeling “on the go”
  • Low self-esteem from years of being judged or misunderstood

At the same time, ADHD often brings unique strengths like creativity, resilience, passion, problem-solving, and the ability to hyperfocus on what matters.

Late Diagnosis and Overlap with Autism

A large number of my clients come to me following a late diagnosis of ADHD, Autism, or AuDHD (when someone is both autistic and ADHD).

For many, the diagnosis brings relief and clarity — but it can also bring grief, sadness, or frustration over the lack of earlier recognition and support.

Counselling offers a safe space to explore these emotions, to process the past, and to begin building a more compassionate understanding of yourself.

How I Work With ADHD in Counselling

I offer counselling tailored to people with ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence. Within this space, you’ll be supported to:

  • Explore how ADHD impacts your emotions, relationships, and daily life
  • Work through shame, rejection sensitivity, and self-criticism
  • Build confidence and self-acceptance as a neurodivergent person
  • Learn and try out tools and methods to manage overwhelm, burnout, and emotional regulation
  • Develop strategies that fit you, rather than forcing you to “fit in” with neurotypical expectations

Counselling isn’t about “fixing” ADHD, it’s about supporting you to understand & accept yourself and find ways of living that work for you. In sessions we can:

Coaching vs Counselling

While counselling and coaching often share similar tools and approaches, they serve slightly different purposes.

Counselling offers space to explore emotions, past experiences, and patterns. It focuses on understanding yourself more deeply, processing challenges, and supporting emotional healing and growth.

Coaching is generally more structured and forward-focused. It supports goal-setting, accountability, and developing practical strategies for everyday life.

In practice, the two can overlap. Many people benefit from a blend of both — where emotional insight and practical action go hand in hand.
