Maybe you are exploring the possibility of having ADHD yourself, maybe a loved has had a diagnosis. You may be a mum of an ADHD or suspected ADHD child and you are finding things difficult. I want to reassure you that I have been in all the situations above- feeling alone and unheard. Having the right support is crucial in these times. You deserve to be heard without judgment.
I feel passionate about helping clients explore ADHD diagnoses, either for themselves or their loved ones. I had a late diagnosis of ADHD; I figured this out through my daughter’s late diagnosis. I feel that support throughout initial thoughts, diagnosis, and support after diagnosis is important. It helps to untangle feelings of not being good enough, feeling different, forgetfulness, trouble focusing, and not being able to switch off to name a few. All these things can impact self-esteem and lead to anxiety and depression. It can feel like you have been let down by caregivers and schools. Finding acceptance and being able to embrace who you are is empowering and can hopefully be the start of a healing process that will allow you to let go of messages that you have been told and understand yourself better. I completed research at uni about parents’ experiences with their child’s ADHD diagnosis. This showed the lack of support for parents and their children, the stigma around behaviour, and attitudes around the condition. I am not an expert in ADHD (I’m not sure anyone is) but I know that understanding, not feeling judged, and being heard is powerful. Let me help you explore what is going on for you.
I have included some websites and books below, that I found useful whilst researching ADHD.
ADDitude - ADD & ADHD Symptom Tests, Signs, Treatment, Support (additudemag.com)
Scattered Minds By Dr Gabor Mate | New | 9781785042218 | World of Books (wob.com)
How NOT to Murder Your ADHD Kid - Sarah Templeton
This is a question I have been asked a lot and the answer has always been the same, I am not qualified to diagnose, as a counsellor, my role is to listen and explore what is going on for you and untangle together how to move forward.
Very moving and very brave of Nadia to show her journey for others to see. I think this shows how ADHD can show in women- this really resonated with me!
